You cook, clean, bathe and put the kids to bed, and in the morning, start all over again. Motherhood is full of unexpected joy, but a little time for yourself would be nice, too. This is especially true now that you want to address some post-pregnancy parts of your body. At Reflections Skin & Laser Center in Cartersville and Kennesaw, GA, we recommend you consider a mommy makeover.
What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A makeover is a customized therapy that allows you to restore the parts of your body most affected by childbirth. We offer different procedures to help lift, sculpt, and tone your body for results that look like – or improve upon – the old you. After, you’ll have a renewed sense of self, only better, because now you have little ones smiling at you every day.
How It Works
A makeover can include treatments that are both surgical and non-surgical. The goal is to give back the appearance you had pre-pregnancy so you feel more comfortable with your body. In this way, a makeover can boost your self-confidence and allow you to fully embrace the beauty of motherhood.
Each woman’s goals are different when it comes to post-pregnancy appearances. You may choose therapies that even your skin tone or eliminate weight in stubborn pockets, both caused by pregnancy. Additional concerns you may want to address include:
- Excess, sagging skin
- Stretch marks or other scars
- The appearance of veins
- Breast symmetry
- Breast augmentation
- Hormonal imbalances
- Stretched muscles
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Body contouring
What to Expect
The duration of your treatment will also vary, depending upon the therapies you elect. We can discuss this in greater detail during your consultation appointment. Again, we want to remind you this is a highly customizable process. Think about your appearance now and what you want it to be, and we’ll help bridge the gap.
We’ll use this time to review a number of items, including:
- Treatment goals
- Drug allergies
- Use of vitamins and supplements
- Previous surgeries
- Risk factors
We’ll also examine those areas you want treated, a process that may require taking measurements, reviewing skin quality, and photographing. We work in a state-of-the-art facility with highly-trained and compassionate staff. Rest assured we’ll take every step necessary to ensure your safety and comfort from the start of your treatment to the end.
Because pregnancy impacts many parts of the body, you’ll likely want to focus on several different treatment areas. We therefore recommend you plan on taking some time off from work to recover. You may require additional time if your job involves a lot of moving and/or lifting.
You’ll also want to refrain from most physical activities so your body can heal. If you have small children, arranging for short-term in-house care may be beneficial. The exact details of recovery will be described once we know the therapies you’ve decided to have.
Who Is This Right for?
We’ll also conduct a review of your medical history to ensure you’re in sound health. This will help you heal as quickly and effectively as possible, and also reduce any downtime you may need for recovery. We similarly ask that you provide us with a list of any medications you’re taking to avoid adverse reactions.
Another consideration is weight, because some therapies work best if you are at or near your ideal weight. Body sculpting, for example, can help remove unwanted fat from specific parts of the body to give a leaner appearance; but it doesn’t help you lose weight.
If you need guidance with weight management, we may be able to help. Some of our therapies are designed to help counter the weight gain associated with hormonal imbalances. Because we offer a variety of treatments, it’s best to know what you want from a mommy makeover and be prepared to discuss those goals during your consultation. Also ask questions, because the more you know, the more comfortable you’ll be.
Candidates should ideally be finished with their family planning. This is not a strict point of candidacy, but waiting until you’re done having children will provide you with the longest-lasting results possible.
Subsequent pregnancies can have the same effects on your body as previous ones. If you get pregnant again after therapy, you may need to start over in your mommy makeover process. We recommend you forego this inconvenience and schedule your consultation once your family planning goals are met.
The therapies we offer are not intended to alter your appearance, but to simply enhance your natural beauty. Having realistic expectations from your makeover will help you feel satisfied with your results. You will look and feel your best, but it’s important to remember all results vary. They largely depend upon your body and the therapies you choose to have.
Because cigarettes can impede blood flow throughout the body and prolong healing, we recommend you quit smoking at least several weeks prior to your therapy. This will help optimize your results and improve your overall health.
After your therapies, we’ll provide you with instructions for follow-up care. Again, this may include taking time off from work, refraining from physical activity, and other recommendations. You’ll need to stick to these instructions to ensure proper healing, meaning you’ll need to commit to self-care.
The Many Benefits
It’s hard to overstate how good you’ll feel after your makeover: stronger, more capable, and more beautiful. These are perhaps the foremost benefits, but others are also worth noting.
Multiple Therapies at Once
With a mommy makeover, you get multiple therapies in one package. This gives you a chance to target different areas in a much shorter period of time. It also means you’ll see overall benefits; opting to only reduce the appearance of stretch marks will yield one result. But combining this therapy with, for instance, a breast augmentation will enhance more parts of the body.
We like to call this a more dramatic effect, which allows you greater satisfaction. You won’t have to look in the mirror and think that although your stretch marks are improved, you still aren’t satisfied with your breasts.
Enjoy Small Pleasures
When you feel good about yourself, it’s easy to enjoy life’s little pleasures, like a day at the pool with your kids, buying a new shirt, or strolling through the park. In addition, being a happier, more active parent means your children will be happier and more active as well.
After pregnancy, your body can look disproportionate because different areas are impacted in different ways. Breasts may become deflated, while fat pockets around the middle or near your buttocks can develop. A makeover can give equal attention to these spots and improve the symmetry of your body.
We’ve touched upon this already, but a makeover does not embrace the one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal is to work with each of our patients individually. This means the therapies that worked for your sister or cousin may not be ideal for you. The benefit here is that you get the appearance you want, as each individual therapy is also customizable.
Making Time for Treatment
Being a mom is no small job. We know you’re busy balancing work, life, and family. But into these responsibilities comes the need to make time for yourself, too. Without that, you won’t be able to fully appreciate the life you’re building.
We urge you to find time in your schedule for your mommy makeover. You’ll likely need to ask others for help, but that’s perfectly acceptable. The main goal is to rejuvenate your appearance so you feel more confident. This will filter down to your parenting skills, where you’ll feel more patient and relaxed with your children.
Invest In Yourself
A mommy makeover is an investment in yourself. You may be thinking you need to put your children first, but to do that, you must first care for your own needs. A part of this is learning to love your body, which we want to help you do.
A lack of confidence can make itself known even to young children. This sends the wrong message – that body image and self-care aren’t important, when the exact opposite is true. Moving forward with your makeover can therefore help teach children that even as you put others first, it’s crucial to also be kind to yourself.
The results of your therapies will likely develop over time. You may not see them immediately after you return home, and you may experience some slight discomfort or swelling. Rest assured this is normal; once your body heals, you’ll see an improved you begin to blossom.
Having patience can help quell any panic that rises after your treatments. This is also normal. Some patients feel the dreaded “mommy guilt” because they gave thought to their own needs. Others feel “vain” for placing such importance on appearance. But you’re not vain, and you certainly shouldn’t feel guilty for wanting to be the best possible version of yourself.
Select the Right Time
Because you may need help with childcare, we recommend you plan your makeover for a time when friends, family, or your partner/spouse can arrange to be with you. Some of our patients prefer to do this in the summer, as part of their vacation time. Others try to coordinate with long holiday weekends or pre-planned work closures. The important thing is to look ahead and schedule in advance.
