Does Sclerotherapy Permanently Treat Veins?

Sclerotherapy is a popular vein treatment that many men and women use to get rid of unwanted veins. But does it actually work? And, more importantly, is it permanent? Unwanted veins can harm your self-confidence and make you feel too embarrassed to take part in some of your favorite activities, like swimming, sunbathing, or just enjoying yourself in a pair of shorts during the hot Georgia summers! At Reflections Cosmetic Surgery & Medical Spa in Cartersville, GA, we can help with a permanent solution. Here’s what you need to know about this treatment and varicose veins.

Is This Sclerotherapy Permanent?

This treatment is a permanent solution for varicose veins. The veins are injected with a sclerosing agent, which causes them to collapse and disappear. Once the veins are gone, they’re gone for good! This therapy won’t stop new veins from forming, but it also won’t make it more likely that new veins problems crop up, either.

Smaller veins generally respond to this treatment in just three to six weeks. If you have larger veins, it may take three to four months to see the final results. When you come to talk to us about your treatment, we can give you a good idea of exactly what you can expect in your unique case!

What Are the Symptoms of Varicose and Spider Veins?

The most common symptoms of varicose veins and spider veins include aching, burning, swelling, cramping, fatigue, and leg heaviness. In some cases, these veins can also lead to skin ulcers.

What Causes Varicose and Spider Veins?

Varicose veins and spider veins are caused by a number of factors, including genetics, pregnancy, obesity, and age. These veins are more likely to form when the valves in the leg veins don’t work properly. This allows blood to pool in the veins, which can cause them to enlarge and become visible beneath the skin.

FAQ About Treatment and Varicose Veins

How Is This Treatment Performed?

This treatment is a simple, outpatient treatment that can be performed in a doctor’s office. The veins are injected with a sclerosing agent, which causes them to collapse and disappear. On the day of your sclerotherapy permanent treatment, you will be placed in a sterilized and cleaned area to await service. Next, an injection is administered at the target site, which usually only takes 10-15 minutes for most patients. This is a fast and effective treatment for getting rid of unwanted veins!

Is There Any Downtime After This treatment?

You can resume your normal activities immediately after this treatment. There is no downtime or recovery period required, though we will have a few aftercare instructions for you. By following those instructions, you can expect to see your results as quickly as possible.

Are There Any Alternatives to This treatment?

There are a number of alternatives to this treatment, including laser treatment and surgery. However, this treatment is the most commonly used treatment for varicose veins and spider veins as it’s usually the fastest, simplest, and most effective solution out there.

What Causes Varicose and Spider Veins?

Varicose veins and spider veins are caused by a number of factors, including genetics, pregnancy, obesity, and age. These veins are more likely to form when the valves in the leg veins don’t work properly. This allows blood to pool in the veins, which slowly fill up, causing the veins to look distended. The valves in the veins keep blood flowing in one direction-upward. When they become weak or damaged, they can’t do their job properly, which causes blood to back up and pool in the veins. This can lead to varicose veins and other vein problems.

What Causes Weak Valves?

There are a number of factors that can contribute, including:

Genetics

Some people are simply born with weak valves. This is due to a flaw in the structure of the valve or the genes that control it. Genes that control the valves can be passed down from parents to children. This is why varicose veins often run in families.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy can cause varicose veins due to the additional weight and pressure that’s placed on the body. The hormones produced during pregnancy can also weaken the valves, making them more susceptible to damage.

Obesity

Carrying too much weight can place stress on the valves and make them weak.

Age

The natural process of aging can cause valves to weaken or become damaged. Aging can cause varicose veins in a number of ways, including the following:

  • The valves may weaken over time and become less effective at keeping blood flowing in the right direction
  • The tissues supporting the veins may lose their strength and elasticity, making them more susceptible to damage.
  • Veins may become enlarged and stretched from years of use.
  • Damage to the valves or veins may not be repaired as quickly or effectively as it was when you were younger

What To Expect From Treatment

This treatment is a simple, outpatient treatment that can be performed in a doctor’s office. The veins are injected with a sclerosing agent, which causes them to collapse and disappear. You can resume your normal activities immediately after this treatment. There is no downtime or recovery period.

Do I Need a Consultation?

A consultation is necessary to determine if you are a candidate for this treatment and to discuss the treatment options available to you. During your consultation, your doctor will ask about your medical history and examine your veins. We will also discuss the risks and benefits of this treatment and answer any questions you may have.

How To Prevent Varicose Veins

Once you get rid of your varicose veins, you naturally want to ensure they never come back! There are a number of things you can do to help prevent varicose veins, including the following:

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to prevent varicose veins. Carrying too much weight can place stress on the valves and make them weak. If you’re overweight, try to lose weight gradually through diet and exercise.

Avoid Standing or Sitting for Long Periods of Time

If you have to stand or sit for long periods of time, try to take breaks every hour or so to move around. You can also elevate your legs whenever possible, such as in the evening, when eating, or at any other time when your job or responsibilities don’t require you to be standing or sitting.

Wear Compression Stockings

Compression stockings help improve blood circulation and keep the veins open. They are made of elastic material that puts pressure on the legs, which helps the veins move blood more efficiently. Compression stockings are available in a variety of styles and colors and can be worn under clothing. They are most effective when worn during the day, but can also be worn at night.

Exercise Regularly

There are a number of exercises that can help improve blood circulation and keep the veins open. Some of the best exercises include:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Strength training exercises, such as squats, lunges, and leg presses
  • Yoga
  • Pilates

If you are interested in trying one or more of these exercises, please speak to your doctor for advice. He or she can help you create a personalized exercise program that is right for you and safe in light of any medical conditions you might have.

Quit Smoking

Smoking can damage the veins and make them more susceptible to damage. The nicotine in cigarettes can constrict the blood vessels, which makes it more difficult for blood to flow through them. Smoking also increases the risk of developing atherosclerosis, a condition that can damage the veins and make them less effective at moving blood.

If you smoke, it is important to quit as soon as possible to help improve your vein health and reduce your risk of developing other health problems.
If you are considering this treatment, it is important to consult with a vein specialist first. During your consultation, we will discuss the treatment options available to you and determine if you are a candidate for this treatment.

I had such a great experience with the staff at Reflections. All were very kind, light hearted, and welcoming. Dr. Gusching also has a very welcoming vibe to him as well and you can tell he genuinely cares about his patients and what’s best for them. It’s over a 3 hour drive for me but his work is worth the drive. If you are in the area or not in the area, give them a call. You will not be sorry that you did!
